About Dalray Limewash
Dalray Limewash is a breathable mineral coating made from hydrated lime and mineral pigments. It creates a soft, matte finish with gentle tonal movement and can be used on a wide range of surfaces including interior painted walls, brick, render, masonry and plaster.
Unlike acrylic paints and many modern limewash-style coatings, Dalray Limewash contains no added VOCs, plastics or acrylic binders, allowing it to form a natural mineral bond with absorbent surfaces.
The appearance of our limewash paint may vary depending on the surface, lighting, and primer used. Like all authentic limewash finishes, light surface transfer when touched is a natural characteristic of the mineral finish, particularly in the first few weeks while curing. This is part of what gives limewash its living, breathable quality and reduces over time. Using Dalray Limewash Primer can help reduce surface transfer. In higher-use interior areas, Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be applied for additional durability and easier maintenance, noting that it will reduce the breathability of the limewash.
Where to Use
Suitable for interior and exterior brick, masonry, stone, render, plaster and most previously painted walls with a matte or low-sheen finish where the surface remains porous.
Limewash is not recommended for floors or wet zones such as inside showers. It may be used on general bathroom and laundry walls outside direct splash zones where there is adequate ventilation. In regularly humid areas, use a compatible breathable mineral sealer. Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be suitable for well-ventilated bathrooms or powder rooms where humidity is limited.
Product facts & coverage
Format: Powdered mineral limewash paint
Pack size: 1.6kg; makes approximately 4L when mixed
Water: 3L per full 1.6kg bag
Coverage: Approximately 30m² with two coats on smooth, properly primed interior walls. Coverage is lower on rough or porous brick and render.
Application: Block brush; apply at least two thin coats
Use: Suitable prepared interior walls and exterior masonry. Not for floors or shower wet zones.
Surface Preparation
The surface must be clean, dry and free from dust, oils or loose material. Repair cracks if required and ensure the surface is sound and suitably absorbent. Glossy or fully sealed surfaces should be dulled, sanded or primed before application.
Testing on a small area is recommended before full application.
Primer Guidance
A primer is not required on raw, absorbent mineral surfaces such as brick or render. Limewash can be applied over suitable water-based undercoats in many situations. However, for best and most consistent results across all substrates, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer, which helps regulate suction, improve mineral bonding, and reduce rub-off. On new or unpainted plasterboard (gyprock), apply two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat first. On very dark colours, apply one to two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat. Then follow with the Dalray Limewash Primer.
Sealer Guidance
In higher-use interior areas such as hallways, entryways, well-ventilated powder rooms and commercial spaces, Dalray Acrylic Sealer can be applied to improve durability, reduce surface transfer and marking, and make the finish easier to maintain. As an acrylic coating, it reduces the breathability of the limewash and is not suitable for exterior surfaces or areas exposed to direct, standing or pooling water.
In bathrooms or other areas subject to regular humidity and moisture, we recommend using a compatible breathable mineral sealer instead. Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be suitable in well-ventilated bathrooms or powder rooms where humidity is limited and the surface is outside direct splash zones.
For exterior surfaces, use a compatible breathable mineral sealer designed for outdoor exposure.
Any sealer may slightly deepen the colour or alter the finish, so we recommend testing it on a small, inconspicuous area first.
Mixing and Application
For a full 1.6kg bag, add 3L of hot tap water (approximately 50°C) to a bucket, then add the limewash powder gradually. Mix thoroughly for approximately 3 minutes until smooth. Do not use boiling water. Stir during use.
Apply thin coats with a block brush in criss-cross strokes. Apply at least two coats, allowing approximately 3–4 hours between coats under suitable conditions. Follow the application guide for surface preparation and technique.
A third coat is optional for additional texture. Use relaxed criss-cross strokes or a soft cloud-like motion to build natural depth and variation. Using less paint on the brush will generally produce a more textured finish.
Shipping
We offer free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $59.95. Orders are dispatched within 1–3 business days. Tracking information is provided once your order is shipped.
Materials
This product is made primarily from hydrated lime sourced from limestone and combined with mineral pigments. Mineral additives are also added to improve workability and binding. No plastics or synthetic resins are added.
Product Information and Safety
Limewash creates a soft, breathable mineral finish rather than a sealed paint film. The final result will vary depending on factors such as surface type, preparation, dilution, application technique and curing conditions.
As with all decorative finishes, proper surface preparation and application are essential to achieving the best result.
When mixing and applying, use appropriate protective equipment including a mask and gloves, and ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid inhaling lime dust and keep out of reach of children. To the extent permitted by law, Dalray’s liability is limited to replacement of the product or refund of the purchase price. See our terms and conditions and safety data for more details.
FAQs
Please read our FAQs page to find out more.
Do I need a primer?
It depends on the surface. Limewash can be applied directly to raw, absorbent mineral surfaces such as brick or render. On previously painted or mixed surfaces, a primer helps regulate suction and improve bonding.
For best and most consistent results, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer. On new or unpainted plasterboard (gyprock), apply two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat first. On very dark colours, apply one to two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat. Then follow with the Dalray Limewash Primer.
You can find more detailed surface guidance on our Application page.
Can I apply over existing paint?
Yes, in many cases. Limewash can be applied over existing water-based painted walls, provided the surface is sound, clean, and not sealed with a glossy or non-breathable coating.
In most cases, a primer is recommended to regulate suction and improve bonding. For best and most consistent results, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer.
On new or patched plasterboard, apply two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat first. On very dark colours, apply one to two coats of water-based acrylic undercoat. Then follow with the Dalray Limewash Primer.
Is it wipeable?
Unsealed limewash is not wipeable in the same way as conventional acrylic paint. For higher-use interior walls, Dalray Acrylic Sealer can provide greater durability and make the surface easier to maintain, although it will reduce the breathability of the limewash.
Where maintaining breathability is important, use a compatible breathable mineral sealer instead. Always follow the sealer manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and test the complete system first.
How many coats do I need?
Two coats are recommended. If you're looking for extra depth, you could go over with a third coat and only paint parts of the wall which increases the texture and colour variance.
Can I use limewash in my bathroom?
Yes. Limewash may be used on general bathroom walls and ceilings that are outside direct splash zones and have adequate ventilation. It is not suitable inside showers or on surfaces exposed to direct or persistent water contact.
In bathrooms subject to regular humidity, we recommend a compatible breathable mineral sealer. Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be suitable in well-ventilated bathrooms or powder rooms where humidity is limited, but it will reduce the breathability of the limewash and is not a waterproofing membrane.
Plan your limewash project
Start with hand-painted colour swatches or a limewash tester. Check which primer your surface needs, then choose Dalray Limewash Primer and a block brush, or shop a Prime & Paint Bundle.
Read the mixing and application instructions and estimate quantities with our coverage calculator. For high-touch interior walls, check whether optional Acrylic Sealer is appropriate. Prefer to see colours in person? Find a stockist.
See it in your room
Check a hand-painted swatch beside your flooring, trim and fabrics in daylight and under your evening lighting. Then apply a tester to your prepared surface and let both coats dry before deciding. Screen images, light, surface preparation and application can all affect how the finished colour appears.
